With its stunning colonial architecture, Fremantle offers a different experience for backpackers travelling Australia. Backpackers in Fremantle have a variety of attractions to see on their travels. Making a base for yourselves in Fremantle is ideal for many backpackers. There are so many options for keeping busy with attractions throughout Fremantle. For backpackers who have a passion for history a trip to Fremantle prison is a must! Fremantle prison was built as a convict barracks in the 19th century and was used partially until 1991! Visitors have been able to visit the prison since 1850! There are a variety of tours for visitors to take part in, including a torchlight tour and a tunnels tour. Open since 1897 Fremantle markets are a great place to experience the culture that thrives in the area. Famous for its unique foods from across the world, backpackers will find local produce along with indigenous products. Open from Friday to Sunday 8am – 6pm the market is something visitors to Fremantle do not want to miss.

Backpackers in Fremantle are also in the ideal location for a trip to Rottnest as mentioned earlier. The port offers a direct ferry which takes roughly 40 minutes to Rottnest where visitors can explore this historical island. Thousands of tourists and locals visit Rottnest every year thanks to its pristine white beaches, amazing snorkeling opportunities, and the famous Quokkas. Backpackers are also able to tick an item off their bucket list by sky diving! I have skydived in Rottnest and I thought it was possibly the best place in the world to do it with the views on offer! A great place to stay for backpackers who don’t know too many people, the hostel offers a shared meal every week. Visitors are welcome to cook together and get to know their fellow travellers. The hostel also offers free bike hire which enables backpackers the option to cycle the streets of Freo in peace not having to worry about parking the car. Another option for backpackers is the YHA Fremantle Prison. Located within the walls of the Fremantle prison, it is the only hostel in Western Australia with UNESCO World Heritage Status. You’re also able to sleep in the original prison cells from the 1850s. Located a few minutes walk from the main strip of bars and restaurants the location is ideal for any backpacker. Backpackers in Fremantle can stay and work for as long as they like. With so much going on around Fremantle every day, many people thrive in the city. Work wise there are plenty of options for backpackers. There is plenty of work available for backpackers looking to work in hospitality which is the main employer in the area. With jobs available in bars, backpackers require an RSA which is easily attainable, click here. Backpackers will meet plenty of fellow travellers and local people in this role and have the opportunity to learn a lot about the local area. These roles pay well for backpackers due to their casual nature. The minimum wage for bar staff is $30.10 an hour in a casual position while it is $60.20 on a public holiday so there are plenty of opportunities for backpackers to save while they are staying in Fremantle.

Another option for backpackers is to work in restaurants or cafes as a waiter or waitress. Work is readily available, and with casual positions available hours are easily picked up when reliability is shown. An RSA may be required with this role as well so it is always worthwhile doing the course mentioned above.

For backpackers looking for somewhere cool and different to live outside of the main cities throughout Australia, Fremantle is a great option. With a live music scene, beautiful beaches, history, and beautiful architecture there is so much to love about Fremantle. Backpackers can use it as a base to see much of Perth and Western Australia whilst witnessing the magic of Fremantle. It’s one of my favourite places in WA.
